Created as part of the administrative reform of 1836, the Municipality of Boticas is located in Trás-os-Montes, in the district of Vila Real, in the lands of Barroso, a World Agricultural Heritage Site. This distinction was awarded by the FAO, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, on the basis of the genuineness of the territory, the traditional way of working the land and treating the livestock, and the community spirit of its inhabitants.
Boticas is home to a wealth of natural resources, reflected in the quality of its landscapes and products. These are the fruits of an economy dominated by livestock production and agriculture, with a strong rural character, and which, by preserving traditions, allows the quality and genuineness of regional products to be maintained. Examples include traditional smoked meats, Carne Barrosã beef and Mel de Barroso honey (both with protected designations of origin).
The new identity and communication are inspired by decorative ironwork and embroidery, seeking to create a bridge between tradition and contemporaneity. This connection materialises in the reproduction of elements of material and immaterial heritage, expressed in around eighty illustrations which, interconnected in a network, evoke the spirit of mutual help and collaboration still present in the fifty-five villages that make up the municipality of Boticas.
